Murphy was the type
of person who stood up for the little guy
and did what he thought
was right no matter what the cost.
This is what drew him to the Navy after and because of 9/11. Knowing Murphy, it was no surprise that once in the Navy; he sought out what many believe
to be the hardest task in the
military. He became a Navy Seal. We his friends feel that it is
our duty to honor Murphy by erecting a monument in his name,
the same way he felt it was his duty to defend his countries freedoms. With this monument, future generations will know
what we knew of Murphy before that fateful day of June 28, 2005
in Kunar, Province Afghanistan.
That Lt. Michael P. Murphy is a
hero and he lost his life fighting for the freedom of our lives.
Murphy should be a looked at as role model for the young and
the old, someone we all should strive to be more like.
The monument that is to be erected is one that represents
what Murphy was most proud of and that was being a Navy Seal. The monument is called a Fallen Soldier Memorial which consists
of a helmet resting on a rifle, barrel down in the ground, which symbolizes a soldier killed in action. At the foot of the rifle are flippers topped with the underwater mask and a knife resting against the flippers to symbolize a Navy Seal. All of the elements that are incorporated into the monument are a seals most
basic and sometimes essential tools derived from the Navy’s Underwater Demolition teams of years gone and from which
the Seals were born. This monument illuminates a man of
stature, courage, and strength, a man who would repeat his
actions without a second thought.
We all know that if Murphy was still with us today he would shy away from all of the praise and acclimations we give him. As his friends, we cannot allow him to be forgotten but rather celebrated so please join us in keeping Murphy’s spirit alive. The monument
is to be unveiled on Memorial Day May 26th, 2008 on the corner
of Ocean Avenue and Baker Street in Patchogue’s Memorial Park
at the conclusion of Patchogue’s Memorial Day Parade. We hope
all will attend and help celebrate the life of Murphy and the
actions of a hero.
